NaBloPoMo: Cover-up

It’s said that the cover-up is worse than the crime. Do you agree or disagree?

The cover-up is just as bad as the crime. The cover-up might involve more deceit and betrayal than the crime, depending on the crime. During the last few days, I’ve watched “Changeling,” a movie starring Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich. It is directed by Clint Eastwood. The movie is based on an actual story about Christine Collins and her son Walter. After Walter disappears in 1928, Christine does everything she can to find him. A boy matching his description is found but she insists that it’s not her son. The Los Angeles police department try to persuade her into believing that the boy is Walter. Collins speaks out against the police department. At the time, the police could send anyone to a mental institution without much cause. According to Wikipedia, it was called a code 12 internment – “a term used to jail or commit someone who was deemed difficult or inconvenient.” So she was sent to an institution.

I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

Unfortunately, there are still government and police officials still trying to hide their mistakes. Criminals are still trying to cover their tracks. It’s up to us to hold everyone accountable. It’s a daunting task but it’s possible. Christine Collins did it with fewer resources than we have today.

Thanks. I didn’t want to give it away. It was a really interesting and tragic story. I don’t think they did the code 12 after Collins sued the department. I haven’t found info to support it either way. You wouldn’t think they would.

  2. I haven’t seen this movie yet. What you shared has piqued my interest. I watch an Arrow episode where the villain son put his mother in the nut house to cover up the fact that he killed his father. Sometimes the world is so twisted!
