I also wear a hat or a very tightly pulled head tie when I write. I suppose I hope by doing that I will keep my brains from seeping out of my scalp and running in great gray blobs down my neck, into my ears, and over my face. – Maya Angelou

If she wore hats while writing, I would consider doing the same. However, it wouldn’t be genuine because I don’t like hats that much. She found her way so I think I can find mine.
I will miss Maya Angelou although I didn’t know her personally. She was an inspiration to me and millions of others. I was lucky enough to hear her speak twice. Both speaking events were amazing experiences that cannot be replaced. Even if I could, I wouldn’t sell the memories for any amount of money.
Her speech would have made a difference in my life whether I was a writer or not. She made a difference in helping others recognize their self-worth. When I saw her, I was a young woman so I desperately needed that guidance.

The poem, “Still I Rise,” is one of my favorite poems.

“Just a small town girl – living in a lonely world.” Concert tickets are practically essential. Musicals are the key to life. I like movies, music, books, and corny jokes.

  1. really enjoyed this – and I am not into hats that much either – but thanks for sharing the angelou quote and this tribute too her was great. <3 – I am going to link it on my maya post if that is cool with you. 🙂

and cool that you saw her twice – my husband was about to see her – she was supposed to speak at a hotel he was working at – but I guess she had to cancel the day of the event – so he almost saw her. anyhow, have a nice weekend. 🙂

  2. I don’t know if I’m doing this right, but I guess I will find out! I wanted to let you know that a long time ago Oprah said that when you wish, wish big. So I wrote to her ( I told you it was a long time ago) and told her that I had seen her show with Gail and Maya and said that they would spend the night at ms angelou’s house and she would make them banana pudding and they would talk and talk. My dream was that my beautiful daughter, so desperately seeking to discover herself could spend the night at Maya’s house, seek her counsel, and eat banana pudding. I’m glad you saw her, and read her works. I love you my darling child.
