What do you find more unbearable: watching a video of yourself, or listening to a recording of your voice? Why?

If it’s possible, can I be a silent film star? I don’t mind watching myself on a screen; however, I cannot stand listening to my voice. When I get nervous, I sound like Julia Child. No one should sound like Julia Child unless they are Julia Child. I miss her cooking show. She was so entertaining. Now I know what Vichyssoise is and how to pronounce it. I probably won’t ever order it though.

I wonder if Charlie Chaplin, Louise Brooks or Mary Pickford felt the same way about their voices. Not all silent screen stars made the transition to movies with sound. Rudolph Valentino died before talkies revolutionized the movies. Fatty Arbuckle’s career was ruined by being on trial twice for murder.
On the other hand, Jackie Coogan had success with “The Addams Family.” Who doesn’t love Uncle Fester?

Some pictures of me. I’m so ready for Halloween! 🙂 And a nap. The last few days have been exhausting. But I’m on the mend, I think.

“Just a small town girl – living in a lonely world.” Concert tickets are practically essential. Musicals are the key to life. I like movies, music, books, and corny jokes.

  1. Jan Hobbs – Nebraska – I like to consider myself a citizen of the world, but sadly, I have never traveled outside of North America (yet). I love animals, reading, people, and good food, in no particular order. I have two grown children, and am wonderfully, cheerfully, and blissfully single! In July 2013 I fulfilled one of my life ambitions by graduation with my B.S. in Sociology, and a Minor in Women's and Gender Studies. I am a Feminist, an Activist, a Social Justice Crusader, a strong advocate for Marriage Equality, and take every opportunity I can get to speak up for true equality for ALL, especially for the LGBGQ community. I am extremely passionate about the things I care about, and sometimes become quite vehement. All that means however, is that my passions are my life. Oh, finally, I am owned by two very personable cats - a beautiful tabby girl named Moogy, and a loverly gray tiger boy named Tinker.

I have had the misfortune of having to listen to my voice on tape, AND watch myself on videotape, both from my previous job as well as in graduate school. Watching myself on tape caused me to sit and cry. It is so painful. I don’t know how actors do it. They must have a high as thick as a rhinoceros. Great blog.

Thanks! I don’t know if I could listen to myself while on television. Actors do seem to have thick skin. Some actors can’t watch themselves either. I don’t think Johnny Depp watches himself on screen.

  2. inspiretheworld2day – I am a stay at home mom with two wonderful children and a fantastic husband. I enjoy trying new things, and recently discovered meditation and yoga. My newest love is blogging that helps me stay focused and grounded and most importantly find the humor in everyday occurrences. I am constantly evolving into the new person I'm becoming with each new day, and often stopping to pause for just a moment to take it all in while breathing and taking time to enjoy the ride.

I must agree. I do not enjoy listening to my voice or the tone of it. Sometimes it even catches me off guard. Certainly it must be the poor sound quality right 😉 Feeling better?
