If it’s possible, can I be a silent film star? I don’t mind watching myself on a screen; however, I cannot stand listening to my voice. When I get nervous, I sound like Julia Child. No one should sound like Julia Child unless they are Julia Child. I miss her cooking show. She was so entertaining. Now I know what Vichyssoise is and how to pronounce it. I probably won’t ever order it though.
I wonder if Charlie Chaplin, Louise Brooks or Mary Pickford felt the same way about their voices. Not all silent screen stars made the transition to movies with sound. Rudolph Valentino died before talkies revolutionized the movies. Fatty Arbuckle’s career was ruined by being on trial twice for murder.
On the other hand, Jackie Coogan had success with “The Addams Family.” Who doesn’t love Uncle Fester?

Some pictures of me. I’m so ready for Halloween! 🙂 And a nap. The last few days have been exhausting. But I’m on the mend, I think.
I have had the misfortune of having to listen to my voice on tape, AND watch myself on videotape, both from my previous job as well as in graduate school. Watching myself on tape caused me to sit and cry. It is so painful. I don’t know how actors do it. They must have a high as thick as a rhinoceros. Great blog.
Thanks! I don’t know if I could listen to myself while on television. Actors do seem to have thick skin. Some actors can’t watch themselves either. I don’t think Johnny Depp watches himself on screen.
I must agree. I do not enjoy listening to my voice or the tone of it. Sometimes it even catches me off guard. Certainly it must be the poor sound quality right 😉 Feeling better?
