Sleep Deprived Music Review: Butterscotch

butterscotch

Apparently Butterscotch is the first female beatboxing champion. Also, she was a finalist on America’s Got Talent. I didn’t see her on the show. I found her on Bandcamp over the weekend.

The Scotch Tapes, vol. 1-3 are available on Bandcamp. She also has a few new singles available that are not on this album.

I enjoy listening to her voice. Also, not every song is exactly the same. She doesn’t sound like every other singer in the world. She still does beatboxing but I think she’s trying to expand and do new things. Some of the songs are a little jazzy. Some are a little more like R&B.

Butterscotch does a great cover of Sade’s “Cherish the Day.” It’s amazing. I also like the songs “Lovesick,” “Orbit” and “The Drift.” “Orbit” is too short. I wish it were longer. Both “Orbit” and “The Drift” songs are jazz-influenced. She could probably do a whole album of jazz and it would be a beautiful thing. Butterscotch is really in her element with jazz – maybe even more than beatboxing.

There’s nothing wrong with this album. I have no complaints really. I was just imagining myself in the studio yelling, “You know what this song needs? More beatboxing!” It’s not true though. If it needed anything, the album needs more jazz. I’m looking forward to hearing what she does next.
