Wolves and Daggers reminded me a little bit of the movie Van Helsing. It’s set at about the same time in history and the main characters are chasing bad guys on behalf of a secret government agency. Also, Van Helsing and Clemeny (aka Little Red) don’t remember very much about their past.
Clemeny Louvel is an agent for the Red Cape Society. She and her partner, Quinn. are assigned to keep the werewolf population in line. Since her partner is injured, Queen Victoria places Clemeny with a new partner, Lionheart, who is a Knights Templar and a werewolf.
The book has a fairly interesting storyline. It could have used a few more details about anything steampunk related.
I was looking up the name Clemeny to see what it means. The name Clement means mild or merciful. Her grandmother always says “Oranges and Lemons” whenever she is a little upset. There’s a nursery rhyme which connects the oranges and lemons and St. Clements. I’ve included it so you can read it and decide how creepy it is for yourself.
“Oranges and Lemons”
Oranges and lemons,
Say the bells of St. Clement’s.
You owe me five farthings,
Say the bells of St. Martin’s.
When will you pay me?
Say the bells at Old Bailey.
When I grow rich,
Say the bells at Shoreditch.
When will that be?
Say the bells of Stepney.
I do not know,
Says the great bell at Bow.
Here comes a candle to light you to bed,
And here comes a chopper to chop off your head!
Chip chop chip chop the last man is dead[1]
