Indie rockers Younger Then’s tagline is “Not Your Father’s Rock and Roll.” I say thank goodness because my dad was into instrumental rock and roll – kind of boring. To each his own, I guess. Anyway, check out this interview that I did with Younger Then, who are not boring at all.
What is the best thing about Buffalo, NY?
Buffalo is an amazing city that doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. The food and people are great. The city has a lot of history. But the best part is definitely the music scene. There is no shortage of talented musicians in this city. Our music scene is definitely thriving.
Where was your first show?
Our first show as Younger Then was at a venue in downtown Buffalo called Waiting Room (RIP).
Who would you follow around -as a fan- on tour if possible?
Kings of Leon has always been a favorite for us. Awesome performers too. Definitely wouldn’t get tired of following them around!
What is your father’s rock and roll? My dad is old so it’s early, early, early rock and roll . . . young Elvis and Ricky Nelson.
My earliest memories of listening to music were in the car with my dad on our way to the Adirondacks where we spent every summer. He used to play stuff like Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffett, Journey, Ozzy. A pretty wide variety. But I think what we really meant by “Not your father’s rock n’ roll” was just the idea that people can expect something a little different from us.
How many stories do you begin or end with “I was Younger Then . . .”?
That whole idea is where the name of the band originated. A lot of the songs we write are very nostalgic and reflect on times of our lives when we were younger.
If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?
Tour bus. Easy.
How long would you guys survive on a deserted island?
Probably longer than most bands. We have all lived together at one point or another. We’ve also all worked together. So over the years, we have spent a pretty significant amount of time together and still haven’t gotten sick of each other!
What were you guys doing before you joined the band?
Before we started writing songs as “Younger Then” we were in other bands together. We’ve all known each other for about 10 years and have been making music together the entire time. Band names and styles have changed over the years. But we’ve just always been making music together.
What do you want people to know about Younger Then?
Music is extremely important to us and we appreciate everyone who supports what we do. We have no intentions of slowing down any time soon!
