Sleep Deprived Music Review: Justus Proffit

Justus Proffit on bandcamp

Shouldn’t all of the b.s. in your life go somewhere? If you’re lucky enough to be musically inclined, you can write songs and make an album. Justus Proffit has taken quite a bit of the negativity in his life and created a bit of magic and called it L.A.’s Got Me Down.

He has defined the genre of his music as “whatever.” It’s a pretty accurate description. It’s kind of punk with a slight hint of shoegaze. It’s too loud and clear to actually be shoegaze.

My favorite track is “Laughing on the Inside.” When I hear this album, I want to go roller skating near the beach with a Walkman. Remember Walkman’s? It’s time to upgrade the portable music player.

There’s an interesting story behind the album cover. There used to be two other guys in the picture. However, they robbed Proffit’s home shortly after the photo was taken. Then after Proffit confronted the guys, they smashed his car.

“Those photos, I just liked that it was us as homies kicking it,” Proffit says. “It ended up working out in a way because I ended up cutting them out of the picture and giving the album more of a theme. There’s a theme around it where you get in that negative circle and it spirals.”

Amen to getting rid of negative people. What I like the most about this album is that Proffit turns a negative into a positive.
