Deanna Campbell of Columbus, Ohio was the 19-year-old daughter of Harold and Nellie Campbell. Campbell and her friend, Richard Boyd, were both shot at Boyd’s apartment in February 1982.
Campbell’s case did receive a fair amount of press. Her parents tried to do everything they could to resolve the investigation. For many years, they had a small ad in the newspaper printed in honor of her memory.
There was one suspect, Roy Sage. He was convicted of the murder of Catherine Wanner, who lived on . She was murdered two days after the double homicide. The police believed that he shot Wanner and then shot himself to make it seem like a suicide pact. Sage was a drug addict and frequent burglar.
The suspect lived on Elmore Court. Boyd lived on Woodsedge Court. It’s about 1 1/2 miles apart. The police believe that all four people – Sage, Boyd, Wanner, and Campbell- were acquainted with each other.
I’m not sure why Sage wasn’t investigated any further into the homicides of Campbell and Boyd. Maybe the district attorney was just satisfied with convicting Sage of one murder. In 1982, there might not have been enough evidence to link him to the crime.
There should be a picture of Cambell on the Ohio Attorney General’s website. It wasn’t hard to find a photograph of her. Also, Campbell’s name is misspelled on the website. Unfortunately, it seems like some cases fall through the cracks even with media attention. Let’s hope that someone picks up Campbell’s case file and finally solves the mystery.
