Some of us may not think of punk rock when we hear the name Spacejam. Our first thought is probably of the movie with Michael Jordan. So if you could put the punk rock band, Spacejam of France, as number two, no one could blame you, right?! What are the chances that Spacejam could be on the soundtrack for Space Jam 2? That would be epic.
In any case, they are still the number one punk rock band named Spacejam and that has to count for quite a bit.
Where have you been staying in 2020?
Mainly in France in the region of Grenoble and also in Geneva in Switzerland.
What have you been doing during times of quarantine?
I worked a lot, wrote new songs. Like everyone else I think, I focused on my work as a musician and songwriter. As we couldn’t do anything more and we were forced to stay at home, we might as well take the opportunity to focus on my music. I also created our last video for our song Alive because the people we were supposed to do the music video with, ceased their activity due to this pandemic, so I had no other choice but to do everything myself and I must say i had a great time. I also learned to look for new information since the msm does not give us any real and serious information on this pandemic and I noticed one thing, the more we look for information, the more we find, so yes we have to sort it out because there is also a lot of bullshit, but overall when journalists no longer do their job, other journalists do it. I realized that today in the information age, ignorance is a choice!
Have you found or re-found any hobbies?
No, not more than usual, because I always liked to do a lot of things. I love to cook, paint and create in general. With this forties as I had more time, mainly I created a lot more songs than usual.
What have you been listening to lately?
The latest Yungblud album “Weird” which is absolutely great. He is certainly a young artist but who has a crazy talent, and who has a very punchy musical universe. You can tell he’s a guy who has listened to a lot of good music in his life and who has a very good sense of lyrics. This guy is crazy and so current, his music speaks to young people of his generation but not only. I love this guy.
Has your songwriting process changed this year?
I wouldn’t say that this pandemic changed the process of writing songs, but rather that it allowed me to take more time to do things. I had more time to review the arrangements and the production of my songs because I always had a lot of songs in advance. And then also in March when it all started, nobody thought we would still be at the same point, so I hoped and kept working on my new songs. Today, after almost a year of lockdown and all this comedy about this so-called pandemic, I’m not in the same state of mind. I have new songs and my lyrics are not at all the same, now I want the whole world to wake up from this world dictatorship in which we have slipped very slowly. So yes, now this pandemic will radically change the direction of my work, I have too many friends whether in UK or elsewhere in the world who have lost everything in this crisis and I don’t want to be silent anymore, I owe them that!
Is there any message that you would like to convey to fans or soon-to-be fans?
Keep faith in music and in art in general. Supporting bands like ours remains vital for us, especially in this period of health dictatorship. So let’s make an appointment very quickly and we count on you to find us when possible. We love you and without you we are nothing.
What is something positive that has happened to you during 2020?
Regarding the band’s activity, we have survived for the moment by adapting to this lockdown like everyone else by focusing on videos, webshows, and by continuing to record and release songs although we can no longer perform in front of our audience. So that’s the positive things for 2020.
