Sleep Deprived Music Review: Buffalo Nichols

Buffalo Nichols music review

Have you heard Buffalo Nichols’s self-titled debut album? Listening to this album feels like Buffalo Nichols has taken a time machine back to important dates in the history of the blues and brought back all of the lessons that he has learned.

The album has elements of folk music and the blues. The lyrics are powerful, especially the song “Another Man.” The topics of Nichols’s songs could apply to the past and current times. I think that the hope is that the state of affairs changes in the near future.

“Part of my intent, making myself more comfortable with this release, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues,” guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl “Buffalo” Nichols explains. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.”

His music reminds me of Robert Johnson. Their voices and guitar playing are somewhat different. The similarities are more in the tone of the storytelling. The stories that musicians tell are just as important as the music.

If I have the chance, it would be amazing to hear Nichols play live in a blues lounge. Nichols will be on tour this fall so hopefully you will all get a chance to see his show.
