In The House in the Cerulean Sea, Linus Baker is a case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. His life is not that great. He has a terrible boss, no friends and a mean cat. Let’s not forget about the nosy neighbor who keeps trying to get Linus to date her nephew.
Linus doesn’t socialize very often. He seems to be pretty secure with certain things, like being gay, and very insecure about other things, like being overweight.
One day, he is given a new assignment that includes traveling to the Marsyas Island Orphanage. There are six unusual children and one mysterious caretaker named Arthur Parnassus.
The group of children consists of a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. Lucy the Antichrist is absolutely hilarious. Just imagine a six-year old Antichrist talking about all of his diabolical plans. Maybe I just have a weird sense of humor but I think it was actually funny. However, the demon child is not all bad. Although Linus is terrified of Lucy at first, they do develop a good relationship.
The assignment is supposed to last for a month. By the end of the month, Linus has become close to everyone. I think he is falling in love with Arthur. He doesn’t want to leave but he needs to finish the assignment. By the time he has to turn in his paperwork and meet with the powers that be, Linus knows what he wants to do.
The House in the Cerulean Sea is my favorite book so far this year. It was funny and also bittersweet at times. I recommend it to everyone. Honestly, I would move to the house in the Cerulean Sea if I could.
If you are against reading about magic or are scared of a six-year old Antichrist, then you are missing out on a great book.
