Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a Gothic horror novel set during the 1950s in the silver mining town of El Triunfo. The town is located in the mountains and distant from the city life that Noemí Taboada knows. Noemi travels to High Place, the estate where her cousin, Catalina, is living with her new husband.
Catalina has written a letter which worries Noemi’s father. So he sends Noemi to check on Catalina and bring her home if necessary. Noemi soon realizes that leaving the house will be easier said than done.
Among the creepy characters is the ghost of Ruth, Catalina’s sister-in-law. Ruth appears in Noemi’s dreams in order to warn her about the family and the house. Noemi is worried that if she doesn’t leave soon that she never will. The hints from the ghost tell some of the secrets that everyone else is keeping.
If you are a fan of Gothic horror like The Haunting of Hill House then you will probably enjoy Mexican Gothic as well.
If you are a supporter of eugenics like the lecherous patriarch of High Place, then first of all ew that’s gross. Second of all, there are probably other books that you should read or therapists to consult. Circle back to Mexican Gothic when you are in a different mindset.
