BIKE of Brazil has a new album, ‘Arte Bruta,’ which is one the most refreshing albums that I have heard during the last few weeks. If you get a chance to read the translation of the Portuguese lyrics, you will see that the album is both imaginative with words and music.
Formed in 2015 by Julito Cavalcante (guitar and vocals), Diego Xavier (guitar and voice), Daniel Fumega (drums) and João Gouvea (bass), BIKE puts their own spin on psychedelic rock.
My favorite songs from the album are “O Torto Santo” and “Filha do Vento.” Their music doesn’t remind me of any band in particular. The band does list Brian Jonestown Massacre as an influence on their style. After listening to both bands, I can hear the similiarities. Both are very creative and intoxicating.
BIKE’s Julito Cavalcante explains, “It was a huge achievement for us and very exciting to be able to record at the KEXP studios and even more exciting to have Cheryl Waters host our recording. It’s not easy to make a living from music in Brazil, it’s even more difficult to tour outside the country and being able to get to KEXP was glorious and we’re going to take that for the rest of our lives.”
I’m regretting not learning a language besides the Latin that I don’t remember. Why didn’t I take Spanish, French or Portuguese instead? Anyway, today I learned that donde means “where” in Spanish. If I could, I would listen to the record in Brazil, while soaking in the sights and practicing the language skills.
