The Method of Loci: NaBloPoMo

Which memory devices work best for you when trying to memorize chunks of information?

Personally, using acronyms, rhymes and chunking are the mnemonic devices that I use the most. Loci technique or memory palace technique are the official terms.

“Loci” (being Latin for “places” is a memory technique based on the idea that a person can best remember places that they are familiar with. So if you can link something (key ideas, items to a list, etc.) with the place that you know well, the location will act as a cue to help remember what you are trying to memorize.” – Learning Tribes

Although I haven’t taken piano lessons for thirty years, I remember the notes are EGBDF. Every Good Boy Does Fine. Acronyms are definitely useful memory tools.

How many of us remember “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue” ? Historical facts can be easier to remember if we use rhymes. Set it to a beat and you can have a nice rap to recite for history class.

“Just a small town girl – living in a lonely world.” Concert tickets are practically essential. Musicals are the key to life. I like movies, music,books, and corny jokes.
