Celebrity: Do we know too much?

Celebrity: Do we know too much?

When I was in college, my English professor mentioned that she had been a fan of a well-known artist’s work. However, when she learned about the intimate details of the artist’s personal life, it affected how she viewed the work. My professor also liked the artist less than before.
The amount of knowledge that we have about celebrities has increased since then. Some of the increase is due to TMZ and reality television. It is too much information. I am absolutely positive that we know too much about Lindsey Lohan and Miley Cyrus. There are other celebrities that I do not want to listen to or watch because they are jerks and not likeable. It is difficult to watch their movies or listen to their music without thinking about their most recent escapades.
I can only think of one actor that has maintained some dignity through his highly publicized drug use and jail time and made a huge comeback. Robert Downey Jr. has somehow made it possible to watch his work without focusing on his personal life. Maybe it’s due to good representatives or his own honesty about his problems. I think he’s likeable and very charming. He is also a great actor so it’s easy to forget that he is Robert Downey Jr.
I know that I know too much. If we could go back to knowing very little about celebrities, would it be better for them and the general public?

“Just a small town girl – living in a lonely world.” Concert tickets are practically essential. Musicals are the key to life. I like movies, music, books, and corny jokes.

  1. Unless I meet them personally or their misdeeds are caught on camera I try to reserve judgement based n the Media and even then we ALL have out foibles. Do love Downey tooooo : )

    1. Can you imagine every mistake we make being in the media? Oh my gosh. It’s a lot of pressure. Oh that Robert Downey Jr. 🙂

  2. I, personally, pay so little attention to what celebrities are doing this doesn’t bother me. A long time ago, I realized that celebrities see just that and what they do in their personal lives isn’t really my business…kind of like the neighbors or somebody at work. So long as my life isn’t in danger or something like that, I don’t really care. :shrugs:

As to your point though, I do think there’s too much importance and knowledge placed on celebrities personal lives overall. 🙂

    1. Thanks. 🙂 I think I get annoyed when I watch the news and celebrities are the main focus. I suppose it brings in ratings.
