When I grow up, I want to be like Imogen Cunningham. I can’t remember the exact year that I discovered Imogen Cunningham. It was approximately 1995, while taking a photography class. One of the assignments was to do a paper on a well-known photographer. I didn’t really know about any photographers, except maybe Annie Liebovitz. I love Liebovitz also but I wanted to find someone new to me.
So I found Imogene Cunningham’s photography and I was hooked. Most of her images are simple and striking, like “Two Callas.” There is also a period of her work that is reminiscent of Pre-Raphaelite art. These photos have a softer, dreamier look. There is one photo called “Dream.”
She didn’t stick with one subject, although she could have. Cunningham was an artist and always evolving.
She worked as a photographer until she passed away. I admire her dedication to her work and art.
