Cold Case Quest: Laura Castillo

Laura Castillo

In the case of Laura Castillo, the investigation got off to a slow start. It took several months for the coroner to determine that the cause of death was a homicide from severe head trauma. Although the police suspected foul play from the beginning, they had to wait on the official coroner’s report.

The one and only suspect was her boyfriend. Newspaper reports state that Castillo was going to leave the boyfriend due to his alcoholism. There had been a domestic violence incident between Castillo and her boyfriend that was dismissed.

The boyfriend called 911 on May 14, 2009. He stated that she passed out in the lawn and didn’t move for at least 30 minutes. Why would he leave her out there? I suspect he was thinking of what he going to tell the police.

I don’t understand why the police never charged the boyfriend. If my sources are correct, the boyfriend died in 2015. So the police won’t get the chance to question him or finalize their investigation.

What happens to an investigation when the main suspect has also died? How will the family of the victim ever get closure?

There is such a thing as a posthumous trial. The prosecution may not want to take the risk; however, it would provide closure for the victim’s family.

If anyone has information, call Crime Stoppers 513-352-3040.
