Interview with . . . There’s Talk

Some people play music that is perfect for playing at a snooty hipster coffee shop. There’s Talk is the first band that should be on your coffee shop playlist.

There’s Talk is a Dance/Electronic/dream pop from Oakland, California. The band members are Olivia Lee, Kellen Balla and Young Lee. They have a new album, bathed water moon, that has just been released.

When I listen to their records, I want to talk about books, music and social injustice with people wearing corduroy and beanies. They are my people. There’s Talk could be your people too.

Until I find a good coffee shop, I will have to do interviews like the following one with Olivia Lee from There’s Talk.

Where was your first show?

We played at El Rio. I remember the headliner sporting bras on their heads by the end.

Do you think that this album is different from “Tiny Strands?”

I wrote Tiny Strands before I met Young and Kellen. It’s been a blast collaborating with them on many more layers of reverb and electronic wizardry.

What’s your favorite social media outlet?

I’m really pleased by my friends’ absurd Instagram stories.

What have you been listening to lately?

Lushloss, Jenny Hval, Hand Habits, Phoebe Bridgers, Emily Sprague, Big Thief, Winter, Palehound, Fever Ray, High and Fragile, Lauren O’Connell, sweet angel Suf (always)

Was it a drastic change from playing in your friend’s garage/studio to playing in front of crowds?

It was a shared garage and we used to practice in headphones in the dark so sometimes Kellen’s neighbors would walk in to do laundry and we would just appear to be singing acapella and banging our heads. I guess a show is not any less awkward, just brighter and louder.

Would you ever go on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert?

Yes. We would just need a lot of outlets.

What do you do when you’re not in the studio or on tour?

Think about being in the studio

Are there any causes/charities that you support?

ACLU, HRC, Trevor Project, Advancement Project, Transgender Law Center, It Gets Better Project, Muttville, Cat Town

Dance Dance

If I was going to be a dancer on “Glee” or on Broadway, I would like to have these clothes and accessories. Actually, I would just like to have them to dance around the house. It would be spectacular to twirl into the kitchen with the skirt and the shoes. It would be worth doing the dishes if I could wear something sassy.

This is a link to my post about becoming a cast member on “Glee.”

Cast Member: NaBloPoMo

If you could be a cast member on any television show, which one would it be? Tell us about your character.

There are so many shows that I enjoy – “The Walking Dead,” “Game of Thrones,” “Hell on Wheels.” We can’t forget about “Orange is the New Black” or “Drunk History.”

So the show that I would love to be a cast member of is “Glee.” I think that I could play a quiet, unassuming librarian named Antoinette McQueen. Antoinette has dreams too. She wants to dance on Broadway before she gets too old.  She can’t sing but she’s got the moves.

Antoinette feels like she got sidetracked by real life in Ohio and wants another shot at Broadway.

Young Again: Daily Post

In a reversal of Big, the Tom Hanks classic from the 80s, your adult self is suddenly locked in the body of a 12-year-old kid. How do you survive your first day back in school?

I need to find at least one good friend.

Then we need to go shopping and buy some clothes that are in style.

Is the body the body that I had when I was 12? My 12 year old body was not very coordinated. I’m totally going to sign up for dance class. Maybe two dance classes. This time around I won’t give up so easily.

Mikhail Baryshnikov: A to Z Challenge

I’ve tried to think of a different topic to no avail. The topic for today is Mikhail Baryshnikov. When I watch Baryshnikov dance, I turn into the chick from “Saturday Night Fever” that says “I just love to watch you dance. I just love to watch you dance.” Can you believe someone thought he was too short to be a ballet dancer? He went on to work with choreographers like Alvin Ailey and Twyla Tharp. His version of “The Nutcracker” won an Emmy. “The Turning Point” is also worth watching. (Hint: It’s on Netflix.)
He was kind of a jerk in “Sex & The City.” They had to figure out some way to get Carrie away from him so she could be with Mr. Big. Personally, I was not crazy about that idea.

In 2005, Baryshnikov opened the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City. http://www.bacnyc.org/ You can buy tickets to visit. It’s definitely going on the bucket list.

I could go on and on about Baryshnikov and dancing. His list of accomplishments is exceptional. So I posted some videos so you can see what I mean. He’s 66 years old and still dancing. Very cool Misha, very cool.

Ginger Rogers: A to Z Challenge

Surprise! It’s not a post about “Game of Thrones.” 🙂
I love watching Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire movies. One of my favorite quotes is by Ginger Rogers.

Did you know she was also an artist, as well as an actress and dancer? She was married five times. Her bar was stocked with soda instead of alcohol. Her favorite color was pink. Who knew we had so much in common? I love her more that I did before starting this post. 🙂 It’s possible that someone will be spending the evening with Ginger and Fred and Netflix.

Music Video Challenge: Day 17, A song that makes you want to dance

Red Hot Chili Peppers. When my oldest kid was about a year old, she loved the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think she gets her taste in music from me. 🙂

Jade – Don’t Walk Away
I heard a sample of this song on Cartoon Network. It’s still makes me want to dance.

George Clinton – Atomic Dog.
“Why must I chase the cat? Nothin’ but the dog in me.” The video is cheesy but the song holds up after time. 🙂
