Toronto Blessings album, “Asleep,” will keep you awake for days.
The album feels a little aggressive and in your face but it’s not a problem. Music is like that sometimes. Life is not all rainbows and sunshine and neither is music. Case in point – Toronto Blessings is brutally honest with their lyrics and music.
Their music is more punk/alternative than anything else. The band used to be in a heavy metal band – Cavorts. Apparently, they got bored and wanted to do something different. So Toronto Blessings was born. You can still hear a bit of the metal influences. Maybe it’s the loudness . . .
You would think that their hometown is Toronto. However, Toronto Blessings are not from Toronto. They are originally from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England.
If we end up renovating our bathroom, I’m going to play this album. Dismantling the bathtub is going to require some aggression and a sledgehammer. Toronto Blessings is perfect for destroying things with sledgehammers and still being thoughtful about the process.
The music is punk rock/rock and roll. The definition of what counts as Punk rock is subjective. Not everyone agrees on what fits into the genre. Some people don’t think The Clash is punk enough. Mark Lind & The Unloved might not be punk rock enough for somebody but they still count.
Mark Lind’s voice sounds like Adam Pascal. Pascal played Roger in Rent and Theo in School of Rock. So now that I cannot unthink it, I hear the band as a punk rock theater band. I don’t know if that’s a thing but maybe it should be.
I would like to listen to this album in New York City – on or off Broadway.
Who is in the band?
The Unloved on this recording are: Jesse Mayer (Diablogato) – drums, enthusiasm Andrew Moreyello (Art Thieves) – lead and harmony vocals, lead and rhythm guitars, musical director, co-signor Jeff Morris (The Bruisers) – lead and rhythm guitars Mark Lind – lead vocals, bass, some guitar, backing vocals Benny Grotto – literally everything else
Big Joanie is a British feminist punk band, which includes band members Stephanie Phillips, Chardine Taylor-Stone and Estella Adeyeri.
The quote that Big Joanie has about themselves is very accurate: We’re like The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and riot grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis.
In November 2018, Big Joanie released their album, Sistahs. I’ve been following the band on Facebook for several months. So whenever I get distracted by all of male rock bands, they seem to pop up on the newsfeed – like they know I need some feminist punk music in my life.
Trust me. We all need feminist punk bands like Big Joanie in our lives. I’m always so happy when the members of a punk band are talented musicians and songwriters. I find Big Joanie to be rather charming and intoxicating. My favorite songs on the Sistahs album are “How Could You Love Me” and “Cut Your Hair.”
Please do yourself a favor and check out their music!
Do you guys remember Mazzy Star? So imagine if their lead singer was not shy and was into punk rock instead of hazy shoe gazy music – then Mazzy Star would be really similar to Slow Kiss.
Both singers sound similar to me. I’m not sure if they resemble each other physically so they probably wouldn’t be able to trade bands without someone noticing. It would be interesting to see if singers from different bands could trade – like Parent Trap but for bands instead of parents.
Slow Kiss hails from Los Angeles and Santiago, Chile. They released an EP, Ultraviolet, in 2017. In the same year, they also released a single, “Pink Death,” which is not on the EP. I like “Pink Death” and “Fade Away.” If you’re into alternative/punk bands – sort of along the lines of Liz Phair, then you might like Slow Kiss.
You’re throwing a party — for you! Tell us all about the food, drink, events, and party favours you’ll have for your event of a lifetime. Use any theme you like — it’s *your* party!
The theme of my party is going to be Pink & Punk. Everything will be pink – pink boozy drinks, pink sugary treats, pink party favors.
There will be bands. I think J and the 9s should play. If she could wear a pink wig ala Jem that would be the best thing ever. The other band will be Sheer Mag. Really, the bands can wear whatever they want.
