Tonight, I read an article about Monika Allen, a cancer survivor who ran a marathon wearing a tutu. “Self” Magazine used a picture of Allen and her friend to make fun of the tutus. I guess they didn’t do any research. The magazine didn’t mention that she ran the marathon while in the middle of her chemotherapy treatments.
No one said that Allen makes the tutu’s and donates the profits to Girls on the Run, http://www.girlsontherun.org/. Girls on the Run is an organization that helps girls gain self-confidence. Donations can be made at their website.
Personally, I love the tutu. I love the picture of Allen and her friend running in their superhero tutus. Allen is an inspiration. I admire her will to get out and run a marathon. Most of us would not want to get out of bed during chemotherapy. This lady ran a marathon, which requires an immense amount of endurance and strength.
“Self” issued an apology online. The apology was kind of lame and hollow. Maybe they can make a sizable donation to Girls on the Run to make up for being so callous.
I’m pretty sure that I’m going to buy a tutu. Maybe four or five.
Cheers to you Monika Allen!!

  1. Yesterday a very good friend of mine died of cancer, and the first thing I saw on line was the Self article. First, how horrible that they didn’t look into the story and just labeled it as LAME. Also considering that Self is ultimately about female health and empowerment why are they trashing icons like Super Girl and Wonder Woman? Monika lives up to those hero standards as far as I’m concerned . So I wrote SELF some hate mail, and I donated to Girls on the Run in my friends name.

  2. This is inspirational. Having been a runner myself, I can imagine this wasn’t easy for her to run a marathon in the midst of her treatments. I’m glad she’s helping out with Girls on the Run. It’s an amazing program. Thank you for sharing this story!

  3. This is incredibly inspirational! I love running, and I do think it heals the soul and the body by releasing all those toxins.

  4. I saw this article online the other day and I almost couldn’t believe my eyes! Self touts themselves as empowering women and encouraging healthy lifestyles… why one EARTH would they then publish a story like this? It totally undermines their credibility in my eyes. It will be interesting to see how they handle this from a PR & crisis communication perspective. The only silver lining here is that Monika will likely get a TON of new business for her tutu’s!!
