Interview with . . . michael webster

Alternative musician michael webster has plenty of music that has been missing from our lives until now. Make haste and listen to his music! The Manchester singer-songwriter’s latest album, a northern perspective, was released in December 2022.

His music is pretty punk rock for a guy that mainly plays the acoustic guitar. It’s like a mix of two of my favorite things – punk rock and acoustic music.

Thank goodness he was available recently for an interview. Please welcome michael webster to the blog!

Tell us about your latest project:

My last release was my second EP “a northern perspective”! It’s a collection of seven of my songs and I spent a good while recording for it, lots of these songs have been under my belt for the past few years so it was super lovely to get them out. I’ve just put out a new music video for one of the tracks too, “future sight” – which you can find at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhAM8R9pr7k

Where was your first concert as a fan? As a performer?

My first concert was actually Robbie Williams at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff when I was five. I can’t really remember much of it, a long time ago! Many of my first performances were up in Aberdeen where I started playing live! A good while ago now.

What is the secret to writing good music?

I don’t think there’s a real secret to it – I think you should just write songs for yourself and do it to a standard that you’re proud of.

Do you have a bucketlist? If so, what’s on it?

Not really! I take life pretty calm, each day as it comes – I just try and make sure I’m always doing stuff!

What was the last thing that you read?

I’m currently reading Carl Sagan’s Cosmos. It’s a lovely read and real insightful!

What are you listening to at the moment?

Absolutely LOADS haha. At this current moment I’m listening to Cloud Nothings’ Here and Nowhere Else – but I’ve been smashing out a load of Mac Miller and Kendrick Lamar recently!

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing?

I literally have no idea. I’ve wanted to do this for so long now I wouldn’t know where to start with anything else!

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

An ideal collaboration would be with Stephen Malkmus – his songwriting ability is insane and I think he’d just be a lovely chap.

What do you want people to know about your music?

I think the most important aspect of my music for me is the personal aspects I put into it. Each line has meaning, often relating to another section of a song or a different one – there’s a lot of crossover between them all!

“Just a small town girl – living in a lonely world.” Concert tickets are practically essential. Musicals are the key to life. I like movies, music, books, and corny jokes.
