Who: Zola Jesus
What: Synth pop. Dark wave
Why: Her voice is really spectacular. She could sing anything that she desires.
Why: She’s the Queen of Americana. Listen to her music and you will know it to be true.
Who: The Warning of Monterrey, Mexico. Band members are three sisters: Daniela, Paulina and Alejandra Villarreal
What: alternative rock
Why: They are very young and talented. It will be interesting to see how they grow as musicians.
Who: Vera Lux of Nuremburg, Germany
What: Folk metal. It’s a real thing.
Why: We all need motivation. Vera Lux could be what you need to get psyched up to go to the store or work. I don’t know if they did any music for “Vikings” or “The Last Kingdom” but they could and should.
Check out their links to hear music and buy band merch.
Side note: There’s a librarian in Ohio with the same name. Maybe Vera Lux needs to know Vera Lux or vice versa.
Who: Unleash the Archers of Canada
Vocals / Brittney Slayes
Drums / Scott Buchanan
Guitar / Grant Truesdell
Guitar / Andrew Kingsley
What: Heavy metal. Some might call their style symphonic metal.
Why: If you had to go into battle with one band, Unleash the Archers would be a great choice. They would be very motivational. Even their name sounds like something Aragorn would say in Lord of the Rings or a commander would say at the Battle of Agincourt.
They are totally worthy of our adoration. Please go listen to their music!
Who: Thundermother of Sweden
What: Rock and roll.
Why: You might be thunderstruck by the ladies of Thundermother. They are fans of Janis Joplin. I think Janis Joplin would be a fan of Thundermother.
It is my opinion that they will deliver on a solid rock and roll album, which will be out in the fall of 2020. Their music videos are also a good time. Check out their links and videos.
Who: Jenner of Serbia
Aleksandra Stamenković – vocals & guitar
Marija Dragićević – drums
Katarina Henc – bass guitar
What: Heavy/Thrash Metal.
Why: They rock as much as any other great rock or metal band. Jenner reminds me of Vixen if Vixen was a touch more metal.
Where: If you feel so inclined, visit the band at the following links. Show them some love!
The post is part of the 2020 installment of the A to Z Challenge. My topic for 2020 is Rock Goddesses. All of the bands have female lead singers.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been to North Carolina. There were good memories of food. My ex’s mom, Ms. C, made the best fried chicken that I’ve ever had in my whole life. If I could, I would introduce the alternative rock band MKNLY to her. They would appreciate the good food and conversation. I have to go – I made myself hungry thinking of Ms. C’s fried chicken.
MKNLY’s vocalist Benjamin Green responded to all of the interview questions that I sent over. Enjoy the interview!
What is one thing that you would like to change about the world?
That’s a really tough question honestly. I would really just like to see alot more compassion in the world. Our children are growing up and seeing so much hate… just hurts to see.
If you could collaborate with any musician, who would it be?
That’s easy, I have always wanted to work with You Me At Six, and of course JoJo!
What do you like to read?
I’m actually not much of a reader! Used to be but these days I’m more of a documentary or history series buff.
Has being lonely ever led to terrible choices in your life?
Yeah, I can say it has. When I was younger I really felt abandoned by my father. It let to a lot of trying to figure out if it was my fault or questioning why, and though my dad, the man that raised me, as there, I always felt like a piece of me was missing. Part of my life I would never have. Which lead to me trying to hurt myself. But that was a long time ago and I’ve grown.
What do you do to keep loneliness at bay?
You know I don’t battle too much anymore. I have a loving family wife and kids. So I just focus on them and my music and trying to live the best life I can!
Do you get to eat at decent places while touring? Any favorites?
Ummm all depends on what you classify as decent! For me, tour life has always been about cheap fast food or lots of peanut butter sandwiches. Although on our last tour we ate at some place, I can’t think of the name of it, in Florida that made pancakes that were probably bigger serving dish! And they were so good!
Do you guys like to cook?
I make some mean spaghetti!!! And love grilling!
What do you want people to know about MKNLY?
We are super stoked and have worked really hard to get all this music prepared to give to the world! We love and appreciate everyone that has supported us or listened to our music!!! But mostly, if you are passionate about something or have dreams, chase it no matter what! Don’t allow yourself to regret never trying! You got this!!
The second that I started playing this album by Houses, I knew that I would love it. It’s not a feeling that I get with every album.
The songs are all appealing in their own way. “Fast Talk” will have you hooked from the start.
“That song is meant to be a memorial for a group of friends I had back in my late teens,” explains Dexter Tortoriello, adding, “Thematically it’s almost like a ballet where you keep driving around the same blocks, and people start disappearing from the car because they’re going to jail or dying.”
Personally, I like “Pink Heaven.” It’s catchy and haunting at the same time – sort of like ghost stories. They scare us but we want to hear more.
Drugstore Heaven will be out for everyone to hear on September 28.
