Canada has given the world some awesome musicians – Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Buffy Sainte-Marie and many more. A new friend suggested listening to the Canadian band Reuben and the Dark. It was one of the best suggestions ever given. So I’m paying it forward and telling anyone and everyone about Reuben and the Dark.

I was also lucky enough to get an interview with Reuben Bullock. Read on to discover more about the band.

Do you prefer vinyl records to CDs?
Vinyl for sure. There’s nothing like it. Also, I don’t think I own a CD player anymore.
Are you a proficient skateboarder?
Somewhat. I wouldn’t say I’m on par with skateboarders these days… but I still feel very comfortable on a board. I grew up skateboarding and that feeling doesn’t ever leave you.
How old were you when you wrote your first song?
21 or 22 I think.
Where was your first show?
Weeds Cafe in Calgary Alberta.
Do you believe in soulmates?
I think I believe in multiple lives. There are different kinds of soul mates. Ones you have already spent a past lifetime with and maybe the ones you are about to spend this lifetime with… that familiarity. The feeling of already having known someone. That magnetic attraction. I believe in that.
What is something that you really love about Canada or your hometown?
The people. I love being from a country that is known for its kindness. Calgary is also a great place because it has all the amenities of a big city but still feels like a small town.
Is there anyone that you’d like to write music with?
Not really, I’ve really learned that writing, for me, is a private thing. I’ve experimented a bunch with co-writing on this album and had some great results… but I prefer being alone with a pen and paper.
Are you going to play anything special for the Indie88’s band and a movie night? Are you taking requests?
We are… but you’ll have to come to the show to find out. No requests.
Will you get a chance to see any other sets at the Calgary Folk Music Festival?
I’m going to try and catch it all. I’m looking forward to Rhye and Damian Jurado. I just was watching Wild Wild Country and have had a Damian Jurado song on repeat in my head for a weak.
What would you like people to know about Reuben and the Dark?
Our songs… I don’t know. I just want the music to have its own reputation. Bigger than our own.
