Wolves and Daggers: A Steampunk Fairy Tale (Steampunk Red Riding Hood Book 1): #bookreview

Wolves and Daggers reminded me a little bit of the movie Van Helsing. It’s set at about the same time in history and the main characters are chasing bad guys on behalf of a secret government agency. Also, Van Helsing and Clemeny (aka Little Red)  don’t remember very much about their past.

Clemeny Louvel is an agent for the Red Cape Society. She and her partner, Quinn. are assigned to keep the werewolf population in line. Since her partner is injured, Queen Victoria places Clemeny with a new partner, Lionheart, who is a Knights Templar and a werewolf.

The book has a fairly interesting storyline. It could have used a few more details about anything steampunk related.

I was looking up the name Clemeny to see what it means. The name Clement means mild or merciful. Her grandmother always says “Oranges and Lemons” whenever she is a little upset. There’s a nursery rhyme which connects the oranges and lemons and St. Clements. I’ve included it so you can read it and decide how creepy it is for yourself.

“Oranges and Lemons”

Oranges and lemons,
Say the bells of St. Clement’s.

You owe me five farthings,
Say the bells of St. Martin’s.

When will you pay me?
Say the bells at Old Bailey.

When I grow rich,
Say the bells at Shoreditch.

When will that be?
Say the bells of Stepney.

I do not know,
Says the great bell at Bow.

Here comes a candle to light you to bed,
And here comes a chopper to chop off your head!
Chip chop chip chop the last man is dead[1]

Eco-friendly Earrings

I don’t mean to brag but I have scored a really great present for the teenager. She likes skulls, steampunk and jewelry.

So I found the sugar skull and steampunk earrings from Green Tea Jewelry. I think that the teenager will love them -until she moves on to another phase. As long as she loves them this Christmas, it counts as a success.

They look heavy but they are very light. The earrings are made of wood. Who knew that wood earrings could be as light as a feather? Probably my mom – she was a hippie once.

The gears on the steampunk earrings really do move.

Green Tea Jewelry makes a variety of things, including switch plate covers, pendants and clocks. Many of their items are steampunk inspired.

How many times can I write Steampunk in one post?

Although most people have seen Steampunk-inspired jewelry and clothing, they might not know anything about the origins of Steampunk. My thoughts have been mostly, “It’s awesome. I think I love it but what is it?”
Steampunk is a futuristic sub-genre of science fiction, which is usually set in either Victorian era in Europe or the Wild West in America. So it’s set in the past but it’s futuristic. (How awesome is that?!) So the steam in steampunk refers to gadgets and weapons that are steam-powered. Authors like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells are major influences. Does anyone remember reading “The Time Machine” By H.G. Wells? ( I borrowed it from someone, who was supposed to be reading it for class. Sorry dude. You missed out.)
As far as I can tell, the term steampunk coined by K.W. Jeter as a play on the word “cyberpunk.”
The movie, “Wild, Wild West,” is another example of Steampunk fiction. The movie was based on a 1960s television series, “The Wild, Wild West.” It wasn’t the best movie ever. Actually, it was really terrible but it did have some cool gadgets.
There is also Steampunk music, which I do not know anything about, except that it is difficult to define. Apparently, Thomas Dolby is a major influence on Steampunk musicians.
The clothing and jewelry are fantastic. It absolutely blows my mind! There are a variety of places on Etsy that make the Steampunk goggles and other accessories. Steampunk fashion seems to be all about accessorizing.
There are so many things about the genre that I cannot fit into this post. However, I have included some links to start you on your quest.

(I wrote the word Steampunk 9 times. oops, make that 14.)

Some info was found in Wikipedia.
