Just a word of warning – when you are googling the words WANK and band, maybe don’t do it with kids in the room. Did you know there’s a contraption called a Wankband? It’s not about music and not safe for work. I can’t unthink it now – who needs a band for wanking? Do not answer that. I’ve gotten off track.
This was supposed to be a nice interview with a band with nice hats and good music. They had a hit in 1997 with “Forgiven.” WANK went their separate ways in 2000. Now they went and got the band back together.
Bobby Amodeo of WANK has the record for the quickest response time. He answered all of my questions in less than 24 hours. He deserves a new hat. Maybe just check out their music as a thank you.
Why did you guys decide to get the band back together?
We all stayed close throughout the years. One night while we were all hanging out playing guitars and drinking beer, we made a group decision that it was time to revisit the magic that we had and bring it back. Best decision we’ve ever made.
What’s the biggest difference between the band in the late 90s and now?
With time we have become better at our craft. Far more life experience now for all of us to draw from. It really has translated into better songs that reach more people.
Where was your first show together?
Club 369 in Fullerton Ca.
What was the first show that you saw as a fan?
Neil Diamond is Las Vegas. Feels like a lifetime ago! He killed it!
What do you guys do when you’re not making music?
Supporting the scene mostly. There’s a lot of great talent here at home and we try to get out and see everyone we can do their thing.
Do you have any guilty pleasures that you can admit?
Yeah I like to listen to “Kiss Me Deadly” by Gen X when no ones looking and pretend I’m in the band. I sing it at the top of my lungs and jump around like a jackass! I’ve always been infatuated with that song.
What’s the most rock and roll moment that you’ve witnessed or been a part of?
We played a show at a little roadhouse here in Orange County called Linda’s Doll Hut when were first getting started. One of the spectators in the audience was Mike Ness of Social Distortion. He approached our guitar player Danny Walker after the show and introduced himself and said he wanted to produce us. That was a memorable punk rock moment for us for sure.
Do you have any pet peeves when you’re at a show?
Truthfully there’s no one thing that sticks out. We’re laser focused when we perform and are always ready to execute.
What makes it worth it to keep making music?
Working together to make something great. The sense of achievement for us as a group makes it all worth it

Now is the time to jump on the train…..WANK is about to take off.

At least anybody should expect those results from Googling “wank”… I got a huge surprise when I went to a supposedly tame public domain site (wiki media) trying to find a picture of a cowgirl… Yeesh — and I was at work! My Marge Tipton (middle aged cowgirl) character would have been mortified. 😉 Hugs.

Holley, thanks for the interview with Bobby. I am so jazzed to hear Wank got back together. I once had the pleasure of seeing Wank play back in the day. They were great. If they have half the energy now, that they did back then, their comeback will be a huge success. They wrote really good music in the 90’s, I can only imagine what 20 years of maturity, and musical growth has done to the skillset of some already gifted performers. I would like to find out by seeing them perform again today.
