In The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Starr Carter is like many 16-year-old girls who are just trying to find their place in the world. Unfortunately, Starr witnesses her childhood friend, Khalil, being shot by a police officer. How many of us would do the right thing even if it put ourselves and our family in danger?
The police and the media paint Khalil in a bad light even though he is the victim. They say he was a thug and possibly a drug dealer. The media can make anyone look however they want them to look – good or bad.
Starr knows what really happened. She also knew who Khalil really was – not the thug that the media portrays him as. The police definitely don’t want Starr to come forward with her story.
Starr has to decide whether she is going to tell the truth or keep silent. Can she be braver than anyone?
Personally, I loved this book. I think the reader can empathize with Starr. We might not know exactly what she is going through but we can listen. We can do better and keep listening and learning.
Recommendation
The movie came out in 2018. So I won’t do a cast list. I like the man that played Starr’s dad, Russell Hornsby. He was Hank in “Grimm.”
If you are looking for an amazing book about issues that are going on right now in the United States, then this book fits that description.
If you are a dirty, racist cop or a defender of dirty, racist cops, you might not like this book but you probably need to read it anyway.
