Favorite Shows for #Spooktober: Grimm

Grimm

Grimm is a fantasy/police drama that is inspired by Grimms’ Fairy Tales. Nick Burkhardt, a Portland homicide detective, has discovered that he can see supernatural creatures who also have a human form. Before she passed away, his aunt told him that he is a descendant of the Grimms, who hunted the wesen (supernatural beings).

There are six seasons of Grimm. Currently, I’m on season 5. I’ve given up looking for Cinderella. Grimm doesn’t seem to retell the fairy tales that most of us know. They writers have created their own stories that have their own history. Occasionally, there is a character that I recognize like the Chupacabra.

Most of the story takes place in Portland. It’s perfect for a show that deals with odd and sometimes spooky or creepy characters.

Before revealing his secret, Nick spent a lot of time trying to protect his partner, Hank, and girlfriend, Juliette. He makes friends with three wesen: Monroe, Rosalee and Bud. It’s almost unheard of for a Grimm to be friends with wesen.

It’s hard to decide who my favorite character is. Maybe Monroe is my favorite because he’s kind of nerdy and adorable but also a bit ferocious.

Favorite Shows for #Spooktober: AHS Coven

American Horror Story: Coven is part of the horror anthology series American Horror Story. Every season is different but all scary in some way.

American Horror Story usually has a large cast. AHS: Coven includes
Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates and Sarah Paulson as the main witches/voodoo priestesses. It takes place in New Orleans in 2013. There are also flashbacks to different periods of time – starting with the Salem Witch Trials in 1692.

Jessica Lange is Fiona Goode, Supreme of the Coven. Her health is failing because a new Supreme is rising but no one knows who it is yet. Her daughter, Cordelia, is the headmistress of Miss Robichaux’s Academy, a boarding school for young witches.

There has been a truce between the witches and Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Priestess. Angela Bassett portrays Marie Laveau. No one has ever been a better Marie Laveau. Unfortunately, the truce has been broken so there is some fighting between witches and voodoo practitioners. Cordelia is trying to keep the witches together but they fight amongst themselves.

My personal favorite character is Myrtle Snow. How many times can she be burned at the stake and make a grand re-entrance? She’s eccentric and a bit snobby but she is dedicated to Cordelia and the coven.

AHS: Coven is definitely my favorite season of AHS. I’ve watched parts of this season twice. However, I’m struggling to get through AHS: Hotel.

Plus, Stevie Nicks makes a guest appearance. What witch doesn’t love Stevie Nicks?

Favorite Shows for #Spooktober: Penny Dreadful

Penny Dreadful

Penny Dreadful is a Gothic Horror show. The show is set in London during the Victorian Era. Penny Dreadfuls refers to the popular serial dime novels published in the United Kingdom during this time.

Eva Green and Josh Hartnett are two of the main characters. Other cast members include Timothy Dalton, Patti LuPone, Reeve Carney, Billie Piper and Rory Kinnear.

There are three seasons. It originally aired on Showtime but it is also on Netflix. So far I’m in the beginning of season 2. I suppose I would be finished watching it but the tone of the show is a little dark and creepy.

Penny Dreadful has characters from Frankenstein, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Vanessa Ives, Malcolm Murray and Ethan Chandler are trying to figure out some supernatural things. I’m still trying to figure out why the demons want to possess Vanessa.

Maybe I should watch season 1 again. I’m okay with that. The show is kind of beautiful to watch. The scenery, clothes and most of the people are gorgeous. I mean Josh Hartnett as a werewolf is pretty handsome as far as werewolves are concerned.

My other favorite character is John Clare, aka Frankenstein’s Creature. It doesn’t seem fair that he cannot find love because of his appearance and Dorian Gray always finds love. When in reality John Clare has a beautiful heart and Dorian Gray has a cold heart. I know that Clare will eventually become violent and angry. Gosh darn it.

So if you are into Victorian era gothic horror then you will probably love this show.

Sleep Deprived Music Review: Frames

Cursed

Frames has released the album Cursed. I promise that you will not be cursed if you listen to it. The album is a blessing and not a curse- even with the name.

The music of Frames is very mellow with a voice that is almost hushed and the acoustic guitar. It reminds me of Indie rock from the late 90s – like Mazzy Star, Aimee Mann or Chantal Kreviazuk. I love all of those musicians so I’m kind of in love with Frames also. My favorite song on the album is “Vase.” The lyrics are fairly confessional like she is telling the audience her secrets.

Frames is from Richmond, Virginia. Honestly, I cannot find very much information about her. Maybe she tells all of the secrets in her lyrics and nowhere else.

I want to listen to this album while having coffee at a sidewalk cafe. If the cafe could play it before their open mic night, it would be appreciated by all who listen.

Be On the Lookout: Olivia Cattano

Olivia Cattano

Update: Olivia has been found!

Hello Everyone,

If you have a minute, be on the lookout for Olivia Cattano. She was taken out of school by her mother, Dawn Vigue, on September 9th and has not been seen since then. Olivia’s dad and family are doing everything possible to find her and bring her home. I do know her dad and have seen Olivia a few times through the years.

Her mother has lost custody but has not been served the paperwork yet. The word is that Dawn has had a history of violence against children. She went on the run while the court case was in process. Dawn Vigue has lived in the Columbus area, Ohio, including Westerville, Powell, and Delaware. She is also good at staying under the radar so she probably isn’t drawing attention to herself.

It is possible that they are staying in the area with a man named “Yogi.” The rumor is that Yogi is a pimp. I cannot stress how important it is to find Olivia. Her safety is really in jeopardy.

If I had to guess, I would say that they could be at a homeless shelter, a cheap motel or a campground. They are more than likely living a transient lifestyle so they could be anywhere. Columbus is also close to Interstates 71 and 70. They could have also gotten on Interstate 75 in Dayton.

Please share the Facebook posts or this post in order to get her Olivia’s story out there. So if you see Olivia or Dawn, please contact (419)202-1404 or (419)603-8661.

If you suspect that this case could be related to human trafficking, contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline 1-888-3737-888 — or Text INFO or HELP to BeFree (233733). Calling 911 is always an option.

Cold Case Quest:Bobby Ann Waymire

Bobby Ann Waymire

It has been 47 years since Bobby Ann Waymire was found on the roadside in Fairborn, Ohio. The Clark County Sheriff’s office believe that she was strangled in an unknown location and then dumped on the side of Haddix Road.

The investigators looked at one man who was an officer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The man was also Bobby Ann’s boyfriend at the time and the last person who was known to see her. At the time, the sheriff’s office did not have enough evidence to charge the boyfriend with homicide. It was 1972 and DNA was not even a glimmer in anyone’s mind.

In 1998, her son asked for the DNA evidence from Bobby Ann’s fingernails to be tested. Unfortunately, there was not any other DNA but her own. In 2007, Bobby Ann’s son asked investigators to look at the case again. I haven’t found anything that says there was new information. It seems like most people still suspect the boyfriend but he has never been formally charged. I’m not even sure if he was questioned again in 2007. It also appears that the boyfriend has gotten away with murder.

Anyone with information about investigation should call the Clark County Sheriff’s Office at 937-328-2560. The sheriff’s office also has a website at http://www.clarkcountyohio.gov/ .

The Woman in White: #Spooktober Book Review

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins was not exactly what I expected. I thought it would be more of a Gothic novel but it’s more of a mystery novel. It was still a great book. The Woman in White is considered to be Collins’ greatest work.

The book is set in the United Kingdom – Cumberland County, London and Hampshire.

There’s not just one main character. The story follows sisters Laura Fairlie and Marian Halcombe, as well as The Woman in White, Anne Catherick. The drawing teacher, Walter Hartright, helps the sisters to piece together the mystery.

The Woman in White meets Hartright on the way to Limmeridge House, where Laura and Marian are residing. Anne has just escaped from the asylum, where she was placed by Sir Percival Glyde, Laura’s fiance. The question for most of the book is why is Sir Percival so interested in finding Anne? She must know something about him that could damage his reputation but what?

After leaving Limmeridge House, Hartright joins an expedition to South America. He and Laura are in love but she still marries Sir Percival. Laura and Marian both move to Sir Percival’s estate at Blackwater Park, where they meet Count Fosco, who is married to their estranged aunt. Count Fosco and Sir Percival are definitely plotting against Laura and Marian in order to get Laura’s fortune. It is unbelievable what people will do for money.

I cannot tell you anything without giving away everything. Trust me when I say, it’s a great book and worth reading.

If you like mysteries like Agatha Christie or Hitchcock movies, then you will love this book. If you are plotting against someone to get their money, then you should read something else.

Favorite Shows for #Spooktober: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is loosely based on “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” Think of the Netflix adaption as the darker, spookier sister of the 90s sitcom. Both shows are based on the comic book series, Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” which debuted in October 1962.

So far there are two seasons with a third season more than likely coming to Netflix in 2019 or 2020. I cannot wait to watch the next season. I would have read more of Sabrina the Teenage Witch comics but it’s possible that no one in my family wanted to buy anything witchy or non-Christian.

Sabrina lives with her aunts, Zelda and Hilda, and cousin, Ambrose in Greendale. Salem, the cat, also lives with Sabrina. You might recognize Zelda, played by Miranda Otto, from the Lord of the Rings. Aunt Zelda might be my favorite character. She’s terrible yet delightful.

If you would like to see the full cast, visit https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7569592/?ref_=ttep_ep_tt.

At the beginning of the series, Sabrina is a nearing her 16th birthday. She must decide whether she will go through with her dark baptism or continue with her life as a powerless mortal. She struggles through both seasons with the good and bad within her.

Some people are horribly offended that the witch coven sign their soul over to Satan. It’s a deal breaker for really devout Christians. Personally, I don’t think watching the show will make me . . . anything . . . Christian, Pagan, Satanist. I haven’t committed to anything spiritual yet and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina isn’t going to change that fact.

Haunted Road Trip for Spooktober

If you are looking something a bit spooky to do this Spooktober, Car Rentals has invented a spook meter to rank seven of America’s most haunted roads. Who wouldn’t love a good old-fashioned scary road trip? When my boyfriend finds out about the haunted road trip, he will have the car packed in record time.

There is a unique story along with a podcast or book to discover even more of the legends on each road. The roads are conveniently laid out in a bone-chilling route that takes around six hours to complete.

If you are brave enough, follow the spooky link to uncover the detailed stories of Amerca’s most haunted roads.
