Bring the Funk Review: Land of Panda

Land of Panda is an Indie Rock band from Akron, Ohio. They play a mix of jazz, psychedelic rock and reggae. It sounds like funk to me.

They released an EP in 2018 called The Funk. My favorite song on the EP is “Never Let Me Down.” So far Land of Panda hasn’t let me down.

What else can I say? Check out their music and decide for yourself. Happy Funktober!

Old School Funk: Sly and the Family Stone

Sly and the Family Stone were super talented musicians. Unfortunately, Sly was not a great businessman. The word is also that he did a lot of drugs back then which probably impaired his judgment.  I read somewhere that he carried his drugs in a violin case. (That is a genius idea- illegal or not.)

I don’t think the band stayed together for as long as they would have under normal circumstances. But what is normal in show business? It’s too bad that they didn’t have a super talented lawyer and a rock star accountant that they could trust.

Sly and the Family Stone left an impression.  At the end of the day, they are still in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Queens of Funk: Millie Jackson

Millie Jackson is sassy. Sassy may be an understatement. If you hear her music, you will not forget who she is.

Her career began when someone dared her to enter a talent contest. She won the contest and the bet.

I didn’t know who Millie Jackson was before this year. I had heard one of her songs but I thought it was Gladys Knight. Their voices are so similar.

Jackson’s songs are funnier and naughtier than Knight’s. She is funnier than most people.

She’s not one to be ignored or pushed aside. Jackson started her own record company and had her own radio show for many years.

Interview with . . . Red Rose Panic

Red Rose Panic brings more to the stage than noise and funk. I mean, they bring the noise and the funk but their music has a bit of jazz and hip-hop too.

They are from Akron, Ohio, which isn’t too far for me to go see their live show. Red Rose Panic was in the Battle of the Bands for the AfroPunk Festival this year. They didn’t win. It’s an honor to be nominated, right?!

So please welcome Red Rose Panic to the blog!

Bring the Funk Music Review: Aaron Kamm and the One Drops

Funk isn’t just one sound. Some funk is more rock. Some funk has elements of jazz or the blues.

Aaron Kamm & The One Drops’ music leans more towards the blues than rock. However, they aren’t just a blues band or a reggae band. They play a decent mix of everything – reggae, soul, blues.

The last album that they put released was Feed the Meter in 2015. I’m not sure why they haven’t recorded another album. If you get a chance, listen to the stuff that they have on Spotify.

Check out their website to see where they will be playing next.

Old School Noise & Funk: James Brown

What can you say about James Brown? He is usually credited with being the actual creator of funk plus the Godfather of Soul.

There are a few things that surprised me while learning more about James Brown.

  • He was involved with music from an early age – way before he went to prison as a teenager.
  • He knew how to play several instruments. I’ve never seen him play guitar but it makes sense.
  • People are surprised that he was a demanding bandleader. I’m not surprised. He’s not sloppy as far as being a musician or a bandleader. You have to be somewhat demanding to get the best out of people.

Queens of Funk: Chaka Khan

ck-on-stage1
Chaka Khan on Jimmy Kimmel Live. I’m almost 100% sure that the guitarist is Ricky Rouse.

Can you name anyone else in the band Rufus? I’d be willing to bet that people know Chaka Khan and draw a blank when asked who else is in the band. Rufus is a great band but Chaka Khan stole the show.

I love Chaka Khan. I love her so much that when I saw in concert, I went as close to the stage as I could get – almost to the fence. Normally, I hang out in the back. Not this time. I was so close that I could see the color of her eyeshadow. Of course, my camera was broken – I didn’t find out until later- so I don’t have pictures. The experience is still mine and no one can take it from me.

Several phones ago, “Tell Me Something Good” was the ringtone that told me that my boyfriend was calling. My co-worker used to laugh and say “Tell- Me -Something -Good is texting you again.”

My friend had a friend named Chaka Khan Jones. I was never brave enough to name my kids Chaka Khan.

Anyway, if you get a chance to see Chaka Khan live and in person, do not hesitate to go. She’s amazing and will probably obliterate your eardrums.
