Sleep Deprived Music Review: The Battles of Winter

The Battles of Winter

The Battles of Winter released their album, At Once with Tattered Sails, in 2016 but it’s still worthy of mentioning. They haven’t posted anything on social media for several years. Hopefully, they are just going off the grid to make new music.

Some of their songs have a pirate theme. So maybe they are sailing around the world until they figure out if they want to set foot on land again.

It’s noisy post-punk. If they are on a ship, then it’s acoustic post-punk unless they have a system for generating electricity. Whatever The Battles of Winter plays – acoustic or electric- is beyond cool. My favorite song on the album is “Love’s White Thread.”

Their music reminds me of Midnight Oil and Depeche Mode but with a dash of post-punk. The Battles of Winter calls London their hometown when they aren’t sailing.

I’d like to listen to this album on a pirate ship with Anne Bonny and Mary Read. We’ll just be over here waiting for the return of The Battles of Winter from their nautical journey.

The Battles of Winter:

Alistair Gale (vocals/guitar)
Lucas Manley (guitar)
Graeme Dinning (bass)
Martin Good (drums)

Sleep Deprived Music Review: Pleasure Venom

Pleasure Venom on bandcamp

If you need to hear music to wake up and get moving, then let me suggest Pleasure Venom of Austin, Texas. Listen to Pleasure Venom. Drink some coffee. You’ll be awake like never before. Punk rock and coffee are what I use to get energized. Pleasure Venom is not for the faint of heart.

You can find their self-titled album on bandcamp. I like the song “I Can’t Find My Black Lipstick.” Same girl. Same.

There’s a song called “Gunt.” Apparently, gunt is a real word. According to dictionary.com, “Gunt is slang for a fatty area below the bully button and above the pubic area of a woman, often as a result of childbirth, weight gain, or just having a totally normal body.” Who knew? Well, Pleasure Venom knows. Whoever the band wrote the song about also knows.

If you happen to go to SXSW this year, Pleasure Venom will be performing on several different days. You probably need this band in your life right now.
