If I am Missing or Dead: #bookreview

Last Wednesday, I stayed up all night to finish If I am Missing or Dead by Janine Latus.  I bought it for $.79 at a thrift store last summer. I thought it was a fictional story but it’s a memoir.

The author writes about her own history of abuse as well as her sister’s story of abuse leading up to her disappearance. I was worried a little bit about being triggered because the book does involve quite a bit of domestic violence and emotional abuse; however, everything was fine and I finished the book.

It’s difficult to say that the book was enjoyable because it’s not an easy story to read. I will say that it was really well done. At first, it wasn’t clear if Latus could combine her story with her sister’s story.  Would it be a one-sided memoir?

It made me tear up at the end.

The most important things that should be remembered from reading this book are to keep talking about domestic violence and to try to get help for yourself or for someone you know.

I could be the worst cook in America. My boyfriend tells his friends about my cooking disasters. I'm glad someone is amused. I like movies, music, comic books and corny jokes.

  1. I always have trouble liking or recommending a book that is difficult to read – it’s not that I dislike the books, but it just doesn’t feel good to recommend a book like that, even if it’s something you should, if only to spread much-needed information.
